The Dutch Association for the Judiciary

The NVvR, the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Rechtspraak (in English Dutch Association for the Judiciary), was founded in 1923 and has its seat in The Hague.

Members

The membership of the NVvR is open to all members of the Dutch judiciary (i.e. public prosecutors and judges) as well as trainee judicial officers. About 70 percent of the judiciary are members of the NVvR. Since 1957 the NVvR has been officially recognized by the government as the organization which represents the whole of the Dutch judiciary.

Code of Conduct for Judges

For judges, the NVvR has established its own Code of Conduct. This code was updated in 2026 and is based on five core values: independence, impartiality, integrity, expertise and professionalism. These are standards that judges set for themselves. They are not enforceable rules, but a guide for professional conduct both inside and outside the courtroom. The code serves as a tool for reflection and dialogue among judges about the meaning of being a judge and the proper exercise of their profession. In addition, the code is intended to show others what behavior they can expect from judges.

Special merit

The NVvR also has guest members: retired members of the judiciary, substitute judges and substitute public prosecutors. On special invitation by the Board of the NVvR guest membership can also be granted to other persons who can contribute to the realization of the aims of the association by means of their (academic) activities and interests. Members who have been of special merit to the association can be appointed honorary member, on recommendation by the Board.
